Blaze of Glory

FIRE!!!!!!

Is what I heard today.... literally. It was just after first period had started, and I had a class that was newer, there were some students that I had never seen before, and the fire alarm went off. It was ironic because just the day before I had asked T (the supply that was helping me with the transition) about fire plans, but we had really just skimmed it. So she handed me my jacket, we did a quick number count of the students and then walked into the hallway expecting it to be just another drill. Well, once we got to the hallway and noticed it was filled with smoke all hell broke loose. Many of the students took off running down the hallway (which as it turns out was actually going past the fire) when they should have just gone down the stairs. I tried to stay calm and keep them all together which was really difficult and we got a bit split up. T was the last one to leave the classroom and she made sure to lock up and headed out with us. So well all get outside and I yelled out for all grade 7 art students to join me, which they did and we got everyone together. Well as you can imagine we are now all outside, most of them do not have any jackets and are just in t-shirts in -20 C weather, so I give away my jacket so they can keep warm. I guess it's one of those times when it sucks to be the responsible adult!!! So we are hanging out in the cold and the fire dept (which happens to be next door) come over to assess the situation.

What actually happened was there there was a fire in the girls bathroom but it was contained to just the bathroom. One of the teachers noticed it and called another teacher, who attempted to put it out. I spoke with him and he said he threw about 5 buckets of water on the fire and tried to keep it from hitting the ceiling. It was enough to scare him a bit, and he had to go to the hospital for smoke and fume inhalation from the melting plastic in the bathroom. The school had to stay vacant for about an hour in total, and most of the school stayed in the fire hall (where we all moved after being outside for about 15 min) We eventually  all got back into the school. My classroom smelled a bit as it was about 40 feet from the fire, but it aired out relatively quickly.

After that, they day went by very quickly. Second period was almost over when we got back in, third and fourth period were the classes with just 1 student, fifth and sixth were prep, and seventh and eighth were the 10,11,12's whom I adore.

So all in all, an exciting day, but actually, a really good day, ;P
